I’m always amazed the people we meet while traveling and then become friends. We met Diane in Sept while vacationing in Hawaii and she bragged, in a southern gentile way, about the shrimp in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  In fact, she assists with the annual shrimp festival and invited us to the festival to show off the Gulf Shores.

Since we were driving through the southern states, we met Diane at her friend’s restaurant, Fish River Grill #3.  We lunched on fried shrimp, hush puppies, okra, swamp soup and “the pistol” filled with cheese and crawfish. The swamp soup is a specialty of the restaurant made with stock, greens and beans. It is much more delicious than it sounds!

The fresh shrimp was lightly coated which didn’t mask the shrimp flavor, unlike other breaded shrimp from my youth.  It was superb. Add the fried hush puppies and okra to made for a satisfying lunch.

Maybe we will attend a shrimp festival in the future, but for now, I’m content with my Alabama seafood lunch.

I enticed Diane to visit San Diego and I’ll introduce her to a fish taco!
