It never ceases to amaze me what I learn about San Diego’s history now that I have a better appreciation of its past. Newly opened Courtyard by Marriott at 6th and J St has rooftop bar, The Nolen, on the 14th floor with captivating views. Of course, sunsets are beautiful but there is more than good looks here.
John Nolen came from the east coast in 1906 as a knowledgeable landscape architect and city planner. His long term plans for the city included, Harbor Island, Morley Field, County Admin Center and location of the airport. He also had a hand in the development of Mission Hills and other projects I take for granted. While enjoying the atmosphere of The Nolen, lift a toast to the man who had foresight to make San Diego a distinctive city.
