I didn’t intentionally arrive into Louisville on Kentucky Derby Day, it just happened that way, and explained why there were no hotels within miles. The airport had red roses throughout and once to our hotel, the guests and staff got excited for the countdown to the big race. Everyone left the front desk and gathered around the TV to watch the suspenseful 2 minute event, joyfully singing along to My Old Kentucky Home. The famous “and they’re off” was announced and before you knew it, the jockeys crossed the finish line, some faster than others with the winner clearly jubilant.
Mabel was dressed for the occasion and her horse won, making her very happy.
The mint julep and original Derby Pie were enjoyed with lots of southern hospitality. I might come back again some year and stay longer to take it all in, wearing my own hat and boots!
