Distinguished and elegant San Diego landmark, The US Grant Hotel, is a special place for my friend, Joyce. When Joyce was in nurses’ training at Mercy Hospital from 1947-1950, she rode the bus from 5th Ave. to have cottage cheese and pineapple for lunch in the Garden Grill restaurant.

Married in 1951, Joyce and her husband often dined in the hotel’s legendary Grant Grill restaurant. We decided to visit the Grant Grill and had a very pleasant lunch as she told me about her early years as a nurse. I learned with her graduation from Mercy, she could get a nursing job anywhere. Many of us old time San Diegans were born at Mercy!

Among many historical facts about the hotel, such as 14 presidents have stayed there, the city’s first radio station, KFVW, was installed in 1939, to broadcast President FDR’s Fireside chats.

Walking and gazing in the lobby lined with old pictures, Joyce commented what a lovely place just to sit and reflect about life. We’ll be back for lunch again. @The Us Grant Hotel @luxurycollection
