Another beautiful day on the Big Island driving along the Kohala Coast to Waimea.

Driving along Kohala Coast

Beautiful drive along the Kohala Coast

The mid week farmers market in Waimea sells vibrant produce grown in the rich volcanic soil. I can never eat enough of the juicy tomatoes and green leaf lettuce during my visits.  Fresh from the earth is best and this produce is very delicious.

The Waimea Midweek Farmers Market also offers handmade soaps, jewlery and Kona coffee.

While in the Waimea area, I stopped into a new bakery which was getting rave reviews from people I spoke with. Patisserie Nanako features Japanese desserts made by Owner/Chef Nanako and they are delicate and extraordinary. Each eye appealing item is made by hand in her bakery and can sell out early. She offers intricate combinations with local flavors and expert presentation. Definitely worth a trip to the Big Island!

I like to find family businesses on the Big Island which are full of character and that give a sense place. 808 Grindz Cafe in Kona is take out only and old school style with a handwritten menu. Orders are written on guest check pads. The big boom box played Hawaiian music and I was called Auntie as I waited for my food. I’m glad modern times haven’t changed the old ways of doing business.

Papa makes and sells his frozen pops for the love of his grandkids and the community on the Big Island, Hawaii. He freely gives samples and has many flavors to buy from the ice chest in his truck. Papa is a good salesman!  The ice pops are made with water, flavored syrups and dairy. Lots of flavors such as guava cloud, Kona coffee, coconut snow and many more depending on what Papa wants to sell.
