Many years ago when I visited South Lake Tahoe, the Red Hut Waffle Shop packed in the hungry skiers (and a few gamblers) and I’m glad to say it’s still here.  The original waffle shop is tiny and packed with red seats and lively customers at the counter and in small booths.

Lake Tahoe is going through growing times and many of the old shops on the main boulevard are gone in name of progress.  Red Hut began in 1959, and has more locations throughout the area. For nostalgic reasons, I had to visit the first one for old times sake.  Located on South Lake Tahoe Blvd, the gravel parking lot is the same and the red painted building hasn’t changed.  There it is, I yelled in excitement!

Crowded on a Saturday morning, I claimed a seat at the counter and was greeted by perky server Diane.  She is fast on her feet as she writes down food orders and swings around to place the order. It’s still an old traditional style diner by hanging up meal tickets on a clip and adding up the bill with a calculator.

In no time at all, my hot crispy waffle was placed in front of me and as I poured on the syrup.  I listened to the breakfast crowd talk about their impending day and soaked in the moment.

The morning brought back fun memories and I was happy to see one place frozen in time.
