The big blue R attached to the Rudford’s restaurant name at 2900 El Cajon Blvd, always catches my eye. Now in its 66th year, the older established North Park residents sit at the counter for lunch and at 2 a.m. a different group will be at the counter, but all eating from the same menu. Meatloaf, Swiss steak, liver and onions, yes, this place is a throwback. Clean and orderly, it’s comfort food with a true neighborhood feel. Make sure to look at their outside wall on Kansas St at El Cajon Blvd. There you’ll find a 6×12 foot enlargement of a famous picture San Diegan Jim Daigh snapped of JKF’s motorcade on its way to SDSU. It was June 6, 1963 and JFK was on his way to give the commencement speech.
Luis has worked here for 35 years and the place is like family to him. Richard has been dining here for 50 years.
Rudford’s is as close to taking in the past as you can get.
