Coachella Valley grows 40 million pounds of dates a year, and I discovered there is much more to dates than the dried box from the store. Shields Date Garden in Indio sells varieties of dates, a lovely cafe and the famous date shake. They know a bit about dates since being in business since 1924.
Inside the store are crystallized dates and date sugar for baking, plus many varieties of fresh dates I didn’t know existed. There’s also dates packaged with fruits and coconut looking very appealing for traveling.
The date shake brings back memories to many and is a must have by watching all the customers asking for their favorite treat.
