Mother’s Restaurant has been an institution for casual dining in New Orleans since 1938 and was on our list to visit.  When we arrived at NOLA in the early afternoon, I noticed no lines in front of the restaurant, so it was the right time to eat a late lunch.

Chef Roland was standing at the outside entrance when we arrived and allowed me to take his picture. He has been cooking up gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp po’boys for many years and the Ferdi special sandwich.

The Ferdi is loaded with roast beef and ham, plus debris. What’s debris? It’s the meat pieces in gravy adding flavor to the sandwich. Of course you can’t eat this without red beans and rice. Our meal was plentiful and flavorful.

City Park is 1300 acres of beauty and I took the street car which was a fun experience to see the neighborhoods and storefronts.

Inside the park is Morning Call serving warm beignets and cafe au lait which is a great alternative to the famous Cafe Du Monde.

Watching servers make the coffee and serving beignets was a continuous show.

3 beignets $2.25 cash only and important to arrive before the tour buses.  My server threw in an extra beignet and with them being hot and tasty, I couldn’t resist!

Morning Call open 24 hours and located in an old casino building inside the park.
